The Association of the Mediterranean Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ASCAME) was established on the 1st of October, 1982 in Barcelona. The main purpose of this initiative was to foster economic co-operation in the Mediterranean, revealing a strategic vision confirmed by further initiatives.
ASCAME gathers more than 300 Chambers of Commerce and Federations, from 23 Mediterranean countries: Albania, Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Malta, Montenegro, Morocco, Palestine, Serbia, Spain, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey. This large and constantly growing number of Chambers of Commerce and other associated institutions belonging to ASCAME, which represent almost all Mediterranean countries, makes the Association the most geographically widespread institution among those of any type (political, economic, scientific or cultural) existing in the Mediterranean Basin (For further information please visit www.ascame.org).
Adana Chamber of Commerce, Alanya Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Antalya Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Çerkezköy Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Denizli Chamber of Commerce, Aegean Region Chamber of Industry, Gebze Chamber of Commerce, Iskenderun Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Istanbul Chamber of Commerce, Izmir Chamber of Commerce, Kocaeli Chamber of Industry, Manavgat Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mersin Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Muğla Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Trabzon Chamber of Commerce and Industry are the members of ASCAME from Turkey. The Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB) is also an associate member of the ASCAME.
Elected as the Chairman of the ASCAME in 2007 during the 18th General Assembly, Dr. Murat Yalçıntaş, Chairman of the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (İTO), fulfilled his duty between 2007-2012. Chairman of Beirut Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mohamed Choucair took over this task from Dr. Yalçıntaş on 27th of May, 2012. Mohamed Choucair has been pursuing this duty since then.
Becoming a member of ASCAME in 2007, Mersin Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Mersin CCI), has been participating in projects of the Association since the beginning and started to undertake the Presidency of the ASCAME Industry Commission in 2009. Within this framework, Mediterranean Industrial Investments Summit was organized in Mersin between 29th of September and 1st of October, 2011 with the collaboration of ASCAME Investment Commission. In 2012, Mersin CCI has been elected to the Presidency of ASCAME Logistics and Transportation Commission. Mersin CCI continues to represent ASCAME in sectorial events within this task.
Mersin CCI and Mersin Chamber of Shipping hosted IIIrd Mediterranean Trade and Port Cities Congress in Mersin with the collaboration of ASCAME in June 2012. Supported by ASCAME during the lobbying activities, Mersin also hosted 17th Mediterranean Games in 2013.
Mersin Chamber of Commerce and Industry looks forward to hosting another great event dedicated to the Mediterranean Region with close collaboration of the ASCAME. Mediterranean Tourism Forum (MEDITOUR) which is organized biennially is one of the traditional and most prestigious events of the ASCAME.
